Students arrive into first grade with math skill levels all over the map. One whole-class math lesson will only reach a fraction of my class, but by dividing them into small groups I can make sure that every student gets the differentiated instruction they need. Of course, it takes a lot to keep the rest of the six and seven year olds occupied! A few simple sets of manipulatives can be used in a multitude of ways to create activities that are enriching, challenging, and fun for every student throughout each unit. Math centers that use things like dice, dominoes, and pattern blocks from Lakeshore Learning make learning math feel like fun and games and keep them engaged so I can spread individual attention throughout the class.
