In kindergarten, students learn best when they are able to not only hear about a topic, but also when they are able to touch and experience visuals when learning. To help with this, we need a chart stand and pocket charts for students to interact with. My students are doing a fantastic job learning in my classroom thus far. However, I have noticed they would greatly benefit from more engaging visuals. They also need to have the chance to manipulate materials in order to engage in the lesson. If students were able to use a pocket chart during our lessons to manipulate the sounds in words, they could easily begin to mastery reading simple cvc words. I truly believe students master early reading skills and strategies when they are able to practice themselves rather than only watch as the teacher models. In order to gain reading success, they need ample opportunities to practice. Providing my students with visuals and the ability to practice manipulating sounds will set them up for such success!
