My STEM/STEAM class is in need of a 3-D printer and filament to improve their technology skills in science. In conjunction with University of Florida, kids will participate in the iDigFossils NSF grant to create models of whale ancestors in order to study fossils, morphology, and the changing Earth from millions of years ago to determine how and why modern whales have adapted and changed to their environment. They will study evolution as well as vestigial structures and look at modern mammalian relatives of the whale and study ancestry. We will be using 3-D printing technology to print models of fossils to study and learn basic printing skills. Students will also utilize resources such as thingiverse and other .stl file databases to investigate and research 3-D printing and scans. My 6th grade students will use the STEM/STEAM student created lessons to learn how to 3-D print a basic file and structure in the Spring of 2019. Students are hoping we can also create a lunch time 3-D printing club and are excited about learning this new skill.
