I teach at a Title I school in which 99 percent of our students are on free and reduced lunches. They have limited resources and most are living with their grandparents. When they come to school they are eager to learn. I have students who are on many different levels of reading that can range anywhere from pre-k through fifth grade. Non-fiction books tend to be harder for them to understand due to the Lexile and the upper level vocabulary. I want my students to learn to love both fiction and non-fiction books. My students need to be immersed in literacy on a daily basis, especially non-fiction. They have limited schema and vocabulary. Most have never traveled out of their neighborhoods. It warms my heart when I see them develop a love of reading through delving into these nonfiction reading experiences. A world they have never known existed. Having this library in my classroom will enable my students to take field trips through the books they read.
