Flexible seating encourages students to collaborate with one another and communicate in ways that deepen their understanding of concepts. Students can easily work in small groups without having to rearrange their items and desks. This kind of seating arrangement encourages the kind of interaction that today’s technology can interfere with. That interaction leads to building a strong community in which students look out for one another and are invested in helping their fellow classmates succeed. Discussion is vital to learning in today’s world and flexible seating encourages lively discussion. Academic discussion is encouraged by this arrangement as well as more personal discussions such as conflict management. Students must handle not always getting to sit where they would like and have to learn to give-and-take in order to keep the peace. Movement in the classroom is vital to physical health, mental health, and student engagement. Flexible seating helps to encourage students to move about in the classroom to find the area that they are the most comfortable working in. The ability to move also helps students who have sensory issues such as ASD, ADD, and ADHD.
