Do you think better on your feet? Perhaps you enjoy a gentle motion or a way to wiggle out your thoughts? Bouncing, fidgeting, rocking, and learning; the students in my first grade classroom explore their cognitive abilities while choosing how they will work and where they will work. The brain functions better when it is allowed to move. The more a student moves, the more oxygen that is sent to the brain resulting in more stimulation, higher metabolism, and healthier, more engaged students. As we learn our minds and bodies need to move (kinesthetic learners) to retain information. Different cortex of the brain are stimulated during movement. A simple chant becomes far more useful when motions are applied. Think of sitting in an office all day looking at your wall. Would you or could you be more effective when you are comfortable? Absolutely! Flexible seating in education has taken the traditional teacher-centered classroom and rocketed the learners into this millennium. Students should feel welcomed and at ease when learning, comfortable while they read and explore. With our new flexible seating options, the energy of students will be harnessed and used to bring out the highest achievement levels when students can interact and engage each other in a setting meant to enrich learning, not stifle it. Student collaboration and higher levels of Blooms' Taxonomy are reached when students can create in comfort. The Hurricane Harvey recovery has been long and is still underway. Students in our attendance zone lost homes, security, and the essential sense of comfort given when they walk into a place such as a church, school, or even a local restaurant. The mere mention of rain in the forecast often brings up very scary memories for not only students who lost everything but for students who saw the devastation first hand.
