Creating a calming, comfortable, safe classroom environment is a top priority for me and my staff. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and home situations. When they arrive at school for the day, they are not always ready to learn. Their mornings were chaotic, they didn't have time for breakfast, or something happened on the bus to dysregulate their little bodies. A calm, comfortable, safe and inviting classroom space can prepare students for the learning that lies ahead. Students are encouraged to use a variety of strategies to ready themselves for the day. Some need a quiet space to sit and refocus. Some choose to sit or lay on the floor and use the deep breathing techniques learned in therapy sessions with social workers and occupational therapists. Others have been encouraged to use coping skill tools such as listening to calming, inspiring music or aromatherapy diffusers.
