My students have found some fantastic scientific concepts to investigate as part of their Science Fair Projects - examining the increasing sugar content in ripening fruit, creating clocks, cell phone chargers, and electricity using the energy from vegetables such as potatoes, examining the effects of high fructose corn syrup and caffeine on the body, and testing the effectiveness of solar powered desalination filters. Without the proper equipment, my students won't be able to test their ideas and see their scientific interests come to life. At the highest levels of science fair competitions, participants are not restricted by the economic barriers that most of my students face. In order for my students to investigate the efficacy of solar powered desalination filters and experiments that must measure salinity, they need access to salinometer, an instrument that measures salinity, the amount of salt in a solution. Multiple students will be completing an experiment that involves mice as test subjects and they need access to a scale to measure the change in the weight of the mice. Further, in order to examine the amount of energy available in vegetables, my students need access to an electrical multimeter, electrical test leads and probes, clock components, and green energy testing kits in order to test their ideas. Projects involving the ripening of fruit, need access to a specialized instrument called a sugar refractometer, so they can measure the exact amount of sugar present in the fruit they are testing and examine how it changes over time. Providing them with the resources they need to test their ideas levels the playing field for all.
