Utilizing multicultural texts like Monster by Walter Dean Myers and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie are amazing tools to support my EL students in their acquisition into the American school system! Myers novel supports high level instruction about our judicial system while also showcasing a new text format that many of my students are unfamiliar with: screenplays! Alexie's semi-autobiographical account details his multiple identities on his Indian Reservation and his American school system. Many of my EL students are experiencing these very similar identity crises and I want to show them that these challenges are normal and there are ways of approaching them to best support all aspects of their lives!
