My father was a hydroponics pioneer in the 1960s. It became our livelihood and I worked along side him with my family for about fifteen years growing vegetables. It is my pleasure to continue to teach this technology to the middle school students I serve. Our school was able to purchase a hydroponic unit and small garden shed to house it in 2011. We have used it for seven years with good productivity, but have depleted our supplies. In order to continue, we need some basic nutrients, chemicals and seed starting equipment, as well as a replacement pump for our recirculating system. The science of Hydroponics is a soilless method of plant production in a limited space and nutrients that the soil would normally provide are introduced in water soluble form. We currently lack the nutrients we need in liquid form. We prefer to grow lettuces, which are heavy users of calcium and magnesium as well as additional nutrients. Nutrient needs must be monitored daily and adjusted to produce healthy plants. Our classes grow and harvest the lettuce which is either used in their cooking projects or is served in our school cafeteria.
