The purchase of these novels will support our studies through reading and writing units on the social and political issue of immigration and migration of groups of people around the world. The reading of this novel by all students builds prior knowledge of three major immigration movements in history: Jews escaping Nazi occupied Germany in 1939, Cubans leaving Cuba during the reign of Fidel Castro in 1994, and Syrians fleeing their war-torn home country of Syria in 2015. The novel, Refugee, helps to develop a better understanding in injustices that happen in the world which leads up to our 8th grade field trip to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. It also leads into our final writing project of the year which addresses writing of position papers which focus on skills of research and arguments about taking stands on immigration issues and policies in our government.
