We value the importance of silent reading as part of our curriculum. One day each week is devoted solely to independent reading in our classroom. Studies have shown that independent reading is invaluable for a wide variety of reasons. Students that read well are likely to go on to successful secondary school careers. Unfortunately, we all know how difficult it can be to read if we are not comfortable. One of the top complaints I receive from my students is that their chair is very uncomfortable. This makes it difficult for them to focus on the material in front of them. They currently have HARD plastic chairs that they sit in during our reading time. I would like to provide them with some flexible seating options such as saucer chairs and folding camp chairs to make their reading time much more enjoyable as well as effective. I believe this will expand even more on the benefits that these students are already receiving during their reading time.
