I believe my students are the world's future leaders, the someday caretakers of our democracy. Accordingly, I believe it is only fitting that they receive an education on-par with the ones received by President Obama's daughters. But the reality is that my students are not blessed with lives of economic privilege. Instead, they attend an economically strapped urban school, which has struggled historically to retain high-quality teachers. There is lots of room for growth -- I have found an unacceptable number of my students to be non-readers, some because they never learned basic reading skills and are too embarrassed as a seventh and eighth graders to carry around picture books on their reading levels. Many of my students are transient and thus do not have public library cards. And perhaps most heartbreaking of all: a large number of students reported on a survey I administered at the beginning of the year that they live in homes where there are not any books at all.
