Dissection is one activity that sparks so much interest and covers so many topics. It truly is an eye opening look into how their body is designed and functions! This experience heightens their awareness of their own body. It not only increases their understanding of the body systems, but their excitement for science. In this unit the students are role playing as doctors and solving real world problems regarding organ failure, sickness, and how to prevent organisms from dying when one part of the body is afflicted. There is no substitute for hands-on, discovery learning. The ability to see how all of the organs fit inside and connect is amazing to students. The dissection rats from Carolina are large enough for students to clearly see how the shape of an organ helps it function as an organ system. The students will use the rats to identify different organs that belong in eight different body systems! Once they begin to examine the specimen, their curiosity peaks into different directions and instantly deepens the learning as they work to research the answers to the questions that they formulate from the dissection. Many people wonder how this type of activity affects students who do not want to actively participate in the cutting and carving of the rat. From personal experience, once the organ systems are being displayed and identified those students also begin to become inquisitive and invested in learning all there is to know about body systems!
