In our classroom, students do work on their feet in groups! Students need spaces for non permanent work to allow room for exploration. We encourage students to take risks with problems, erase and try different ways, and to extend material to new ideas. To support this way of learning, students work on vertical non-permanent spaces in random groups as they try to answers fun questions like "how many perfect squares are between 0 and 10,000." Questions like this get students talking about vocabulary and strategies in a nonthreatening environment. The learning stems from their interest in the process of figuring out these problems and the questions generated about ideas popping up as they work together and observe other group's work! I would like to give the students these different colored markers this year so that I can clearly see the work of different students in each group. It is important for work to be done on vertical spaces so that work can be displayed as a resource to other groups, hense the whiteboard spaces. Since students are forming questions in groups, having a laser printer is crucial to creating resources for the kids to use in real time. As a facilitator to the learning process, when I observe student work and discussion I create questions and resources to facilitate student understanding and generate for practice. I would love to be able to give these resources to the students in real time instead of revisiting another day.
