I cannot wait to watch my students see themselves as mathematicians. Too many people these days feel comfortable saying, "I'm not good at math." My goal each year is to lower the math anxiety in my students and raise their comfortability in various mathematical concepts. When students explore, collaborate, and make connections between themselves and the math they are growing their mathematical mindset in leaps and bounds. Reading instruction and math instruction are very similar in how they should be taught with: math to self, math to world, and math to math. Students need to make connections to what they have learned in prior grades and be shown by the teacher where they are going. Daily my students come in and work with Morning Math Tubs to ease into their school days. Not knowing what they are always coming from, the morning math tubs have various games, math manipulatives, puzzles, or other interactive materials for the students to collaborate with. I use materials in the morning math tubs that allow them to discover math concepts before we need to use them in class to learn with. This allows them to have time to "play" before we use the same materials to learn with.
