Since our textbook is the same one they used in this course last year, my students are disinterested in reading the same stories over again. I need some modern stories that are on the right reading level and that are relevant to my students' lives. If connected to the right book, everyone likes to read, and I predict "All American Boys" and "Dear Martin" will surprise and engage my students. The narrators of these books are teenage guys like my students, and their stories will prompt good classroom discussion about contemporary issues. We will read these books within a unit on social justice. I will pair relevant nonfiction texts with the novels since nonfiction analysis is an important part of students' success in English 1. I also plan to bring in guest speakers from our community to inspire these young men.
