My Salt to the Sea unit is quite large and extensive, allowing students to engage with characters and historical situations beyond their familiarity. It is the only "whole-class" novel that we read during the year, but right now, I do not have enough books for students to individually read on their own. Salt to the Sea is a novel of profound struggle, deep emotions, and tragic triumph. All things that middle-school students are intimately familiar with! Through the points of view of the four characters, my students will be able to make connections to their own lives... and to a world beyond their own experience.
