We have an existing garden that I, as a Master Gardner, kindergarten teacher, and parent, established four years ago with the help of my husband and community. After my kindergarten day, I lead garden lessons for all grade levels at my school through sixth grade. We learn about all aspects of gardening including: composting and the nutrient cycle, importance of native plants and pollinators, benefits of worms and soil health. Every student is fully involved in the process from preparing the soil, sowing the seeds, taking care of the plants and harvesting. In addition students learn about the nutritional benefits of a variety of food they grow. We are, however, missing a few critical items to make our entire garden program run more smoothly. We are missing a large umbrella base, yet we have the umbrella to provide shade while discussing a lesson. We also already have four compost tumblers, yet since we have so much food and we compost school wide, everyday, I've had to rig compost cylinders from wire fencing. Our issue is the ravens get in those homemade cylinders and drag the food scraps all over campus and the neighborhood. The kids even put up a scarecrow. People have complained about the food scraps outside the compost area. Our compost program will have a more positive image if we can get the tumblers I've requested because they contain the food more securely on campus. I also already have a short little hose, but it has cracked completely, and our water timer is on it's last leg.
