Number sense is a definite weak area for my students. The students struggle with operations with fractions, mixed numbers, and integers. This deficiency has caused most of my students to experience "math anxiety" and "math phobia." As a math teacher, I want students to see the fascination and beauty in numbers, patterns, and problem-solving instead of shutting down when they see a fraction. If I were able to teach my students how to use a scientific calculator they would become more comfortable and confident in their mathematical skills. Students are allowed to use scientific calculators on the end-of-year standardized assessment if all students have access to the same device. Students having access to these calculators will not only give them more confidence but will help raise their test scores!
