There will be ten stations in our new sensory room. There will be a cutting table, a Lego table, a sorting table, a music table, a coloring table, a swing, a tricycle (outside), a clay/sand table, a stringing table, and a rice table. The back wall will be covered with the faux stone patterns and other textures. We moved all of the clutter out of this room and we are painting the room (which now resembles an institution) with a calming light blue color. The art teacher will remove the ceiling panels and she will have her students each paint one of the discolored popcorn ceiling tiles with happy and calming works of art. Many of our students are unable to even hold a pencil so I have chosen items such as the cutting patterns, a container and Water Balls, and a container to create a rice bin to build up the muscles in these students hands. Students will learn to classify with the Sorting Bears, Building Blocks (I have S.T.E.M. patterns for them to follow, and Adopt a Puppy Figures. Students will learn the alphabet, to spell their names, and build muscle tone by stringing alphabet letters on Monkey String. Children will be given a schedule to follow and a para will be at each station to work one-one-one with each of my twelve students. I have twelve middle-school-aged autism students of differing abilities. This will be great!
