Firsthand interaction with manipulatives helps students understand mathematics. Manipulatives provide concrete ways for students to bring meaning to abstract mathematical ideas. They help students learn new concepts and relate new concepts to what they have already learned. The Mathematical Multiplication Machines will help my students understand and learn their multiplication facts. The machines will be used during my math workshop where students can work independently on the machines. The benefit of using manipulatives to master phonics patterns has long been established, especially with struggling readers. Research supports the use of multisensory instructional techniques to engage students, and improve their performance. During our third grade intervention block, students would work with the phonic words and games to strengthen their skills.
