My integrated language arts classroom consists of a 90-minute block of reading and writing. Many of my 6th grade students become antsy in one space for 90 minutes! I want to provide them with flexible seating options to make my classroom more comfortable while they are writing and/or reading. My students are diverse learners. Many of them require movement breaks and fidget items to keep them on task. Research shows that there are many benefits to having flexible seating and fidget items that provide students with movement. They are more focused and on task. Adding fidget bands to some of the desks will give students the opportunity to discreetly move their feet during the class period. In addition, providing them with bouncy ball chairs and wobble chairs give students an opportunity to release energy by constantly moving. They are designed to help all students, especially those with ADHD. Students bring Chromebooks to class daily. During independent writing and reading time, they are allowed to sit anywhere in the classroom. Adding a portable lap desk with a laptop stand will give students a more flexible seating option by allowing them to type on the floor in a comfortable space. Lastly, students can utilize the bean bag chairs and reclining seats during free writing and reading time. The goal is to create a space that meets the needs of all learners and to make my classroom more comfortable and welcoming.
