One of the ways I like to bring my students together is through the shared experience of reading. Watching my students bond and connect while working through a novel has been a very special experience for me, and hopefully for them as well. However, this can be challenging when my 8th graders have a variety of reading levels ranging from 2nd grade through 12th grade. These books have been chosen to reflect the students' wide range of interests, cultures, and reading levels. With this project, I want to create literary circles in my classroom. Literary circles promote collaboration, literacy, and a genuine love for reading. Students will be able to read through a novel that is appropriate for their level in small groups of 4. And since they will talking in smaller, more intimate groups, they will be able to have more honest and open discussions about these novels. At the end of the literary circle project, the groups will have the opportunity to share with the class what they liked (or disliked) about their novel. Hopefully, they will be able to convince their peers to choose their novel next. By donating to our project, you will provide these students with a more accessible way to explore the joy of reading!
