As a Special Education teacher for children with Autism in an urban low-income school district, I would love to provide my students with flexible seating to attain longer focus for their academics and classroom dividers for quiet areas.
Majority of my students choose to stand while working or eating because sitting can be uncomfortable for them. I would like to expand my room and provide flexible seating to expand their learning abilities. With that being said, I have found a few resources that will be helpful. Throughout my research I have found bouncing is a widely used technique to help calm anxious children or those on the autism spectrum. The reason is the gentle, repetitive motion helps to reduce anxiety through a physical action that requires no thought. Flexible seating also helps students attention spans, makes them more actively engaged in the classroom, gives them an active outlet without disrupting their learning, helps those with ADHD and autism.
Classroom dividers will provide a quiet area when a student is in a behavior. This will elevate the possibilities of more behaviors occurring in the classroom. These awesome dividers can be useful when working in a secluded area to attain focus and attention!
