Our school serves a large population of students with socioeconomic disadvantages and social-emotional needs. Currently, there are a total of 106 students in school counseling amongst two providers. In addition to regular counseling, our mental health staff works to de-escalate multiple emotional crises per day, while assisting teachers with implementing social-emotional classroom support. Our student support team is working to provide all staff with training on the effects of trauma on student learning and ways to increase trauma sensitivity. As the social-emotional needs of our students are so great, we are seeking financial assistance in acquiring, training and implementing a therapy dog program to assist our students with their social-emotional development. A growing amount of research points to the undeniable need for social-emotional learning in primary education. Our school plans to utilize a therapy dog to offer animal-assisted interventions on the individual, small group and classroom basis. The therapy dog will be used to provide emotional support to students experiencing trauma and/or emotional crises, utilized in small groups to provide an avenue for positive peer interaction and shared experience to build social bonds, and as a basis for classroom lessons on empathy, self control and kindness. These social-emotional skills are an essential foundation for the higher level executive functioning needed for learning.
