2020 has been a year of challenges for students all over the world. For my students, who reside in NYC, they faced the traumas of COVID-19 first hand, racial prejudices and injustices, and the many familial hardships resulted from remote learning, working from home, and/or job loss. Students need connection, and with the possibility of not being in-person for the 2020-2021 school year, I have to be creative in how we will connect and address these very real traumas and complex issues. With the help of a new and diverse classroom library, I will be able to read stories to my students on social-emotional skills and experiences, stories that celebrate differences, and stories that address racial injustices. Depending on how the school will reopen, these stories will either be read aloud in person 6 feet away with masks, on Zoom, or pre-recorded. Through the stories and the experiences of the many characters in our new books, my class will have the chance to have enriched discussions and connect with each other on the very real challenges that 2020 has brought and to hopefully find ways of coping and help make the world a better place for all.
