Students have access to the instant gratification of digital photographs every day. You can quickly snap a picture without much thought snapping away until you get one that is acceptable to use. You can easily delete any of these photographs without hesitation.
Students will be experiencing the historical nature of photography through the use of Polaroid film. Students will have to slow down to take these photographs. Since you get one chance per picture to get a great image, they will have to take the time to think about what they are taking a picture of and how to compose it. Students will also learn where the Polaroid fits into the history of photography.
My students will be taking the Polaroid camera and film home to take artistic photographs of their everyday lives. This will give them the opportunity to artistically express something about themselves. They will also work out how each photograph should be composed while experiencing photographic history. After taking all the photographs students will mount and display them for discussion.
