One major issue in our school is lack of motivation towards future goals. Students are very insular and don't see what happens in the world, outside their cocoon nor do they know how to push for those goals that seem out of reach. Using non-fiction books such as "Grit" by Angela Duckworth and "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell, students begin to see that it is themselves that have to be the catalyst for moving towards these goals. Using other non-fiction texts will fill in the gaps in their knowledge about American society, for example, "Evicted" or "Hope in the Unseen" provides a broader sense of what the world is about and how they can fit in. By having these books on hand in my classroom library, students will be able to check them out, read them at their own pace and gain valuable insights that we, as educators, cannot always provide everyday.
