How are readers ignited? Probably not from a textbook or test prep packet. Students that do not seem themselves as readers often only need time, space, and the right book to propel them into the rich world of literature. So what makes the right book? The ones that speak to their interests. Think kids hate poetry? Tupac's The Rose That Grew From Concrete continually flies off my shelf and into their hearts. The same goes for nearly any graphic novel. In fact, graphic novels cover a rich array of genres that invite students to develop their interests in books. This list of books was curated through student interest inventories and individual conferences with readers.
