Future Problem Solvers is a series of competitions designed to develop the ability of young people globally to design and achieve positive futures through problem solving using critical and creative thinking. FPSPI is a dynamic international program involving thousands of students annually from around the world. Students are tasked with proposing solutions to complex scientific problems confronting society. This year's topics include Mission to Mars, food waste, and the appropriate rolls/limitations of drone-based technology. Students are evaluated in specific academic categories. Our students compete in the scientific writing portion of the competition. These students are the best and the brightest of the best and the brightest. Last year, four of five of our entries finished in the top twenty in New York State, and one of our students earned a spot in the international competition (vying against students from over thirty-seven states and more than eight countries). This year, we are seeking to enter ten students in the statewide competition with the hope of prevailing to the international level. The school has allocated two periods per week from my teaching program to Future Problem Solvers; however, neither the students, nor the school currently have the funding for the entry fees. Our collective future and the fate of our common home depend upon raising young people with the type of critical thinking skills and scientific literacy they develop at Future Problem Solving.
