In May, our 2nd grade students will be studying immigration to the United States. We use the curriculum Core Knowledge Language Arts. During this immigration unit, students will learn about the experiences that immigrants from Europe and Asia had as they made the difficult trip to the United States. Our curriculum doesn't include many stories about immigrants from Central America. The city in which we teach and in which our students live is a city of immigrants. Lawrence is a gateway city, and the place where many families settle once they have left their home countries, which include the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and Cuba. Many of our students are immigrants themselves or come from immigrant parents. As a Grade 2 Team, we have pulled together resources to share with our students to help them learn about immigration from the countries in which their families come from. We would love to be able to bring them to the Lawrence Heritage State Park as a culminating activity. Our students will be able to deepen their understanding of immigration in the past while making connections to their own experiences and the experiences of immigrants today. Help our students attend an engaging and interactive trip to the Lawrence Heritage State Park!
