My students love, love, love puppets! I really want them to create stories about things they are learning in their homeroom classes in a way that they would really have fun. They can create shadow puppet skits on any thing from the rock cycle to social issues in an easy way. I set a few guidelines for them to follow like vocabulary and subject matter and they come up with the story and characters. The set up for this is so easy and versatile. I play inspiring music on the portable speakers while they create their puppets and skits. After twenty minutes, they get to perform their skits they came up with. They have the plastic menu holders with a paper in it on the edge of a desk and a reading light shining behind it. They can then do their shadow puppet skits. It is so fun and can be adapted to any topic you want. There is no better way to encourage creativity and teach core standards like habitats than through storytelling. I did a scripted puppet section last year with my students and they had such an amazing time and were so creative. I want them to be able to come up with their own stories. It makes the subject matter more personal and they remember more.
