Reading gives students the opportunity to view the world from another's point of view. And uniquely from animals, which there is no other way to do. Animals are innocent and have no control over what happens to them. Books like Dog Diaries, The Lorax, Hoot, Strider, and others will give my students the opportunity to feel what the animals in these stories feel. To understand what animals often experience, good and bad. These books will then potentially create animal advocates. Students who grow into adults, parents, politicians, and leaders who fight for animals or anyone weaker than they are. Our world needs more love for animals and those who can't help themselves. Animals are often put in horrible and cruel situations. With books like Ivan the Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla and Chained I can help students see from the animal's point of view then advocate for them, while also meeting our academic standards. One lesson example will be to have students read one of the many animal books I have chosen. They must then write a letter from the animal's point of view to the animals' owner. They will have to explain what they are feeling, why they feel that way and then tell how the owner should rectify the situation. With these books and the lessons I have planned for them I know I can help my students feel even more compassion for animals. This class is so loving I know they will appreciate these materials so much. An I'm sure the animals they care for and help will appreciate them too.
