Our middle school is one of the only schools in the city that offers Spanish to grades 5 - 8, giving our students the chance to learn a second language before high school! However, we don't have any texts in Spanish above a 5th grade level. As our students progress academically, we need Spanish texts to match their reading level and interests! Since all of the books we are ordering are also available in English in the library, this is a great opportunity for our students to practice reading in both languages! Additionally, we have a bunch of English Language Learners new to the school who read at high levels in Spanish, but struggle with English texts. Reading books in both languages will help them grow and keep them invested in DEAR! Students will read these books in both English and Spanish class, and they will be able to cross-reference the titles with their counterpart. We are so excited to give them more interesting books in Spanish, as so many studies show that learning a second language is great for cognitive growth.
