My students currently use traditional desk seating in my classroom. With the materials from my project I will transform my classroom to a flexible seating arrangement. This allows students to reduce the duration of sedentary periods. I believe that flexible seating will enhance the personalized learning strategies that we use at our school. If students are able to work on personalized lessons wherever they are comfortable, I will be able to work with small groups to improve student achievement. While reading the article Rethinking the Classroom: Spaces Designed for Active and Engaged Learning and Teaching, this statement jumped out at me. “Comfort is not always a quantifiable phenomenon. But we know that when people are uncomfortable, they are distracted. Temperature, lighting, and furnishings all play a role in a person being comfortable. Psychological comfort is also important. Environments that are intimidating or uninviting will influence the depth of learning that can take place.” By donating to my project, you will be helping to provide a variety of options that will allow my students to make seating choices to encourage them to be more engaged in their learning. Students will be able to sit at tables with comfortable chairs, select standing desks, or get comfy with a floor pillow or bean bag on the rug. These choices will lead my students to have a positive outlook on learning and help them succeed!
