Literature is an important part of a student’s development. Reading about a character’s life experiences has been shown to develop empathy and compassion. (Scientific American, October, 2013, https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/novel-finding-reading-literary-fiction-improves-empathy/) Using this novel, the sixth grade literature team at our school will explore the Life Principals of compassion, perseverance, and tenacity. We will relate the book to our expectations while also teaching about plot and literary devices. This book is a companion piece to The Giver, which is read in the middle school years. Our purpose is to provide contemporary literature for our students to study universal life themes while being able to more fully develop their emotional intelligence and provide a protagonist with whom our students can relate.
