With these books, my students will be able to make much-needed connections to what they read. This will peak their interest level and help draw them into thinking deeply about what they are reading. Kwame Alexander's books are written in diverse language and verse which will draw my students in, especially for my young boys that are struggling with reading. A Boy Called Bat is about a child who is in the Autism Spectrum and how everyone is really different and it is ok. The other books are ones that represent struggles and how people persevere to overcome difficult challenges. The last two books are current novels which my students would enjoy immensely, but we don't have access to them.
