Math students often complain that we don't teach them the things they really need to know for everyday living in their futures. They want to know how to lease an apartment, get a car loan, budget their money, and make money on their money! My course teaches them about personal financial management in a very real way. Supplementing our course text with The Motley Fool's Investment Guide for Teens: 8 Steps to Having More Money Than Your Parents Ever Dreamed Of, will peak their interest in the course material and motivate them to keep learning math during their senior year. I plan to incorporate chapters from the book, especially into our units on the stock market and investing. I also want to give the students an opportunity to play the original Game of Life and write about their game strategies before and after we do the units on the stock market and investments. Most high school students think the stock market is only for rich people, and they don't know about mutual funds, nor do they see themselves investing now or in their futures. I try to emphasize the need to invest early and often to maximize their financial potential.
