Each morning I am greeted by 21 enthusiastic third grade learners who come from all over our district. They are a unique group of diverse students whose families originate from all parts of the world. My students bring with them energy and excitement for all things learning and it is quite contagious. I am truly blessed by this amazing group of students and feel the intense desire to keep their enthusiasm level high throughout their learning experience.
Right now, we dive into our math curriculum with high excitement as we explore the possibilities of multiplication and division, with the anticipation of learning fractions very soon! In order to make the concepts come alive, they need engaging hands-on experiences with numbers. Math manipulatives achieve just that! Cuisenaire rods are critical to helping my students grasp the otherwise abstract concept of fractions. These tools will help students see and touch the true values of fractions as they investigate real-world mathematical situations.
Students who internalize the true significance of numbers go on to understand higher concepts of math with greater ease and without feeling the fear that often comes with learning math. Fun, hands-on games help make learning math accessible and exciting. This sense of success is essential for my students’ entire academic careers.
