Students in second grade are an active bunch of students. As Chip Wood wrote in "YardSticks" seven year old students have an improved ability to play sports. With this they are always on the move. As they grow into 8 year olds that energy increases along with their imagination. With flexible seating students will have the opportunity to use their energy and imagination in the classroom. These options will allow them to use their energy in positive ways and they can keep learning while moving. The top nine benefits of flexible seating are: 1. Choice- lets students feel empowered by having control over their environment. 2. Physical Health- flexible seating allows students to wobble, rock, bounce, lean, or stand which increases the flow of oxygen to the brain. 3. Comfort- when students are uncomfortable they get distracted. 4. Community- this seating encourages students to share and encourages them to take turns. 5. Collaboration- it allows students to easily work in small groups or pairs without moving desks. 6. Commitment to learning- environments have a direct impact on student achievement. 7. Communication- it allows for higher order thinking, such as problem solving and conflict resolution. 8. Sensory Input- this can help students focus and process information 9. It's simply FUN!
