This is the second year my Geometry and Algebra II classes will be a flipped-mastery classroom. A flipped-mastery classroom combines two major concepts: (a) attention is redirected from the teacher to the learner, and (b) students study a series of learning objectives at a flexible pace. Redirecting the attention from the teacher to the learner involves a combination of interactive video lessons and discovery learning activities. Students need headphones to listen to these interactive videos in and/or outside the classroom at their own pace. They also help minimize distractions from our very active classroom. These methods allow me to individualize lessons to meet the unique needs of each student, and gives students the freedom to ask questions and to get help on more difficult concepts where, otherwise, they may be on their own. It will also give students an opportunity to participate in projects and activities that will help develop a deeper understanding of the concepts they are learning.
