Not only do students need to learn scientific facts, but they also need to participate in scientific experimentation and hands-on learning. This allows them to see that science is about discovery and that discovery can be fun. Students need to hone their observational skills and learn that being a good observer is a key skill for being a scientist. They also need to have some sense of the unknown as well as the known. All of this will add to their understanding of the world. Microscopy is an ideal activity to engage children in scientific observation and discovery. Much of contemporary science involves observing nature and making deductions from these observations. By using a microscope, the students are discovering a new world that they have never seen before- a world of fine structures of living things, rocks, and man-made objects. In doing so, they discover how familiar macroscopic objects are assembled and function. They can record their observations and make deductions. In short, they become scientists. The microscopes will be used in my classroom to help my students discover the answers to many scientific questions. The students will first learn how the microscopes work and then we will begin our explorations. They will use the microscopes as they participate in some of the following activities: Finding the coin thief, Creating a flower petal garden, Drawing a water flea circus, Painting a microbial landscape, and Playing microscopic bingo. This just short list of some of the adventures my students can have with the magnificent microscopes. I'm really looking forward to using them in my classroom.
