My students are 60% free and reduced lunch and many have not had exposure to literature that helps them fall in love with reading. They know that they want to go to college but have no idea how to get there, and won't stand a chance unless they become fluent readers soon. They need books that inspire them to put in the practice they need to become readers, closing the literature and vocabulary gap between them and their more affluent counterparts -- who will be competing with them for admission to the college of their choice. We want all our students to pursue lives of active citizenship. College attendance, with literacy as a foundation, will be essential to this goal.
