In the digital age, coding is becoming basic literacy. Learning computer code is like learning a second language, the language of the future. The items I have selected are simple computers that start students off on a path to successful programming. They will work simple and eventually, more complicated tasks designed to answer scientific questions through experimentation, data collection and analysis. These very basic mini-computers (Micro:bits) will allow my students to learn the basics of coding and begin to write their own computer programs to solve these problems. They will develop more logical ways of looking at problems or answering scientific questions. This coding project will help my students develop as logical thinkers while improving problem solving, math, reading and laboratory skills. It will also encourage creative thinking and collaboration. Up to this point, the only computer experience my students get is a very basic class in keyboarding and simple computer literacy. In a world becoming more and more dependent on technology, an understanding of how that technology is developed through computer coding is valuable knowledge. The students and I are so excited to start on our new adventure in the world of coding.
