The purpose of this selection of books is two-fold. First, these books will instill positive attitudes towards tolerance and respect. Reading books about a variety of families, cultures, and experiences will help my students to become more culturally aware and respectful toward people with different backgrounds and perspectives. Each book was carefully chosen for its positive message. Second, these books also allow students to see themselves in the book. This helps children to have a positive self-concept. Seeing characters in a book that look like you, have a family like yours, or have similar experiences that you have is very powerful for a child. With these new books, my students will be exposed stories that are "windows" into a variety of families, cultures, and experiences, as well as books that are "mirrors" that reflect and validate their own.
