In teaching my students through this struggling year, I have learned that my students take more of an initiative to read a book if they know it is part of a series like Among the Hidden by Margret Peterson Haddix. Zane and The Hurricane by Rodman Philbrick are two class sets of books I would love to incorporate into my classroom as well as working with a program on laptops and kindles that involves various audio recordings to practice their comprehension and vocabulary. In having headphones and technology in the classroom, the students can work quietly and comfortably while they learn. Within my class, aside from reading the novel together, I have students relate themselves to the main characters and analyze how they would have handled the situation if the tables were turned and they found themselves living in an alternate condition. Books like Zane and The Hurricane are books that will truly hit home for my students and they will be able to make a connection on a deeper more personal level. The story of the main character mirrors the traumatic experience my students have gone through during and after Hurricane Harvey. Through the entire rebuilding process for our community, I constantly remind them that our area was not the only place that has ever been impacted by a natural disaster. In reading this book, they will be introduced to Zane and Hurricane Katrina. I am excited for my classes to open this book and be reminded that through all of the efforts taken to restore our lives to normal, nothing can be accomplished without the help of others. I want them to always remember that they will always have someone willing to lend a hand during a time of need.
