Going into the 2nd week of school, I realized that not many students were bringing in school supplies. I couldn't figure out why, because for the last few years, I have been blessed with an abundance. During morning meeting, we discussed what we did over the weekend. More than half of the class was excited to share that they attended book bag drives at local churches and centers. We must give back to undeserved communities, and these resources of school supplies will get them on the right track! My DonorsChoose.org project includes many of the supplies we haven't gotten that would enhance the learning in the room. Students will engage in center based learning, and this project includes several activities for them to enjoy including a printer for better access. We use glue sticks regularly to complete weekly word sorts. Primary composition books will help early writers. The black books encourage character education and teaching students to live the skin they are in. Teachers should assist students to navigate their own individual paths to success. By setting high expectations, and providing meaningful feedback along the way, our children will always strive to become better. They must understand that their education is priceless. Just as the late Maya Angelou recited in her poem Still I Rise, “Giving the hope that my ancestors gave, I am the hope and dream of the slave.” I teach this history so they will understand that they will have to work persistently to achieve their goals in a society built to watch them fail. I encourage my students to have high expectations, and be prepared to rise with their peers on a global level, despite differences. This school year, I was named the 2018 Friendship Teacher of the Year. What an honor! My work continues!
