Last week my students began learning about various kingdoms. We were focusing on the animal kingdom but we still need to explore the others. I told them that we would explore the world of microorganisms. I borrowed a microscope and set off to venture into this tiny world. Immediately, I had problems with the magnification level of the microscope. It was just not quite good enough for a third grade classroom. I was able to make it work by exploring some active yeast but even that was a struggle to see. In the days that followed we learned about the plant kingdom and that plants had cells (with cell walls). However, the only plants cells that we could observe under this low-level of amplification was an onion. This technology is unavailable in my school district and is necessary when teaching. Please consider helping my purchase this microscope for my classroom.
