Students must have their basic needs met and feel safe before they are able to learn. Research has shown that whether due to trauma, underdevelopment of the internal senses (vestibular and proprioseptive), or hyperactivity, students who have daily sensory input are able to focus for up to 4 hours. The Regulation Station is a place where our students can spend 15-30 minutes rotating between centers. With this being our first year of implementation, we are looking for items to fill our room! For example, the Lycra swing provides vestibular input, helping the child feel calm and helping them understand where they are in space. Another center is the Crash Mat. Here, students will be able to fall onto a soft, foam-filled mat that will help alert their joints and provide proprioceptive input. Battle ropes will be a center that allows for heavy work, providing a needed outlet for anxiety. Providing this nontraditional space for the students of today will not only encourage further neurological development and intellectual growth, it will help foster adults who are able to self-regulate, find healthy ways to deal with emotions and stressors and be successful parents and leaders.
